Lauren Dane Is Here to Chat and a Giveaway of Relentless!
Monday, April 27th, 2009

Please join me in welcoming talented author Lauren Dane! I just met her for the first time at RT and saw her win the best erotic futuristic award for Undercover. Lauren is here to talk about her writing today and the book that begins where Undercover left off, Relentless! Leave Lauren a comment or ask her a question, and you’ll qualify to win a signed copy of Relentless tomorrow (Tuesday) morning!

relentless

In this erotic universe, passion knows no rank…

Since the first settlers came through the portals from Earth, fifteen Families have held the rule of the Federated Universes in their hands. There’s never been a better time than now to throw out the old and usher in a new order. Give voice to the unranked. Abbie Haws has spent her life battling the system. A fighter, she’s always been too busy and driven to pay much attention to finding love. But when she’s granted audience with Roman Lyons, the head of House Lyons, who stands for everything she hates, her instant attraction catches Abbie off-guard…

It’s common knowledge that the Known Universe revolves around Ravena—and that Ravena revolves around Roman Lyons, bred to lead since birth. Roman dreads his meeting with a defiant—if stunning—rabble-rouser. But, sometimes, headstrong personalities in the conference room make for hot-and-heavy, guilty trysts in private….

Now, Abbie will show Roman the parts of her world he wouldn’t otherwise get to see. And he’ll give her a glimpse of the Families’ age old tradition and unleash a sexuality he’d never given rein to before.

Reviews

Top Pick from Nightowl Romance: Fiery, erotic, and rich with plot, this book is definitely a keeper on my shelf.

4 1/2 Stars from Romantic Times Booklovers: Dane delivers yet another erotic story with a quick-moving plot, detailed worldbuilding, emotional conflict and impossible love that will tug on the heartstrings. Pulled in from page one, readers will enjoy the delicious sensuality between Abbie and Roman and crave it long after the story is over.

Recommended Read from Jo at Joyfully Reviewed: Relentless is a do not miss, stand in line when the bookstore opens book. It is also Joyfully Recommended by me to you as one you won’t want to miss.

Chrissy Dionne gives RELENTLESS 5 Blue Ribbons at Romance Junkies: Emotionally charged, passionate and at times volatile RELENTLESS once again proves that Ms. Dane is a first class author who is fully capable of delivering exactly the sorts of storylines that readers crave.

Mad at Novel Thoughts says of RELENTLESS: RELENTLESS is a definite keeper and one I know I’ll reread many times. Filled with everything I (and other romance readers) want in a romance book, RELENTLESS is a MUST read!

Lauren’s Interview

BK: Thank you for joining us, Lauren!
What is sure to distract you from sitting down and working/writing?

LD: LOL, probably my kids, maybe my husband. Household stuff like laundry and dishes. If we’re just talking about goofing off, it’s likely to be IM with friends, etsy.com or youtube.

BK: What are you working on presently? What about upcoming releases?

LD: I just took a small break after finishing up Coming Undone (January 2010 from Heat). But I did work on a proposal for a new series, sort of like my Chase Brothers books with a twist. I started Trinity, a spin off from my Cascadia Wolves ““ that’s out in October from Samhain. Next releases coming up are What Happens in Vegas…After Dark from Spice and Relentless, a book that takes up after Undercover ends, from Berkley Heat ““ May 1 and May 5 respectively.

BK: What’s the best compliment you ever got on your writing or a book? I like it when people tell me the book was not what they expected and they liked it. I love it when people fall in love with my characters and their families. Family is a huge theme in my books so it pleases me when other people notice it and enjoy it. Aside from that, I got called masterful in a review not too long ago, it made me blush.

BK: If you could time travel to any time or place—the past or future—where and when would you go to, and why?

LD: Hmmm. That’s a hard one because I like where I am now. But I love turn of the century America. So much promise, the world was changing so dramatically. Women were beginning to attain more rights and independence. I have to say, I am a huge sucker for Brenda Joyce’s Deadly series because it’s one of the few that does that time (and now you, so keep it up)

BK: I’m always interested to hear about the different strains that go into the creation of an author’s fantasy/futuristic world. What was the genesis for your development of the Federated Universes in Relentless?

LD: I have a long and abiding love for epic worlds and futuristics give me the opportunity to play around with themes very much important today but in a different context. So I can write about class, about caste systems in a way that doesn’t make people defensive because it’s in some far off future. I can make it about other people, which I find so much fun.

So when I wrote Undercover, it was because I had this idea about second chance love between different classes, but I wanted the heroine to be a warrior on some level. The scene where Sera walks into the barracks in the opening of the book came to me without much effort as I started to write. I love building worlds, it’s why I have so much fun with paranormals and futuristics. I can make stuff up. It’s my world and my rules. Of course then it becomes my job to be sure the world makes sense. I wanted them to be related to humans on some level so I knew I had to bring Earth in somehow. Once I had that I had to figure out how they came to be there instead of Earth. That of course cascades into travel in general, which I’d originally planned to do via space craft. But it didn’t feel quite right, so I ended up with portals being a mode of movement from one universe to another.

Essentially, the book is about how worlds are made up, who governs them and why ““ I just had to give that all a context in this world. But I really like gray areas so while the Imperialist Universes are non-democratic and fascistic in nature, the Federation is freer, with democratic notions, but it’s oligarchic in nature. So the past (ancient Greece) connects with some far off future because humans on Borran are not so much different from humans in Greece.

For me, I like writing futuristics that are reflections in some sense, on who we are or were as humans. It’s the best of both worlds.

BK: Fascinating answer, Lauren. Thanks so much for chatting with us today, and best of luck with Relentless!

Be sure and leave Lauren a comment and you’ll qualify to win a copy of Relentless!

Hi Beth! Thanks for having me today and it was such a pleasure to finally meet you face to face!

    Booklover – thank you!

    Danielle – Thanks!

Robin – I like both! Obviously I got my start with epublishers and I still continue to write, quite happily, with Samhain as well as NY publishers. So much of publishing is about audience and niches, so I’m thrilled I can write my werewolves and Chases at Samhain because NY is not very excited about wolves just now. Also, Samhain is very good to me, I have a fabulous editor, they give me wonderful covers and I have no complaints at all. Berkley is also really great and I love writing for them too. If I am allowed the chance, I plan to continue doing both traditional publishing and small/digital publishing as well.

Danni – thank you, I love futuristics too!

Blodeuedd – I love sci fi as well – I’m thrilled to be able to write it.

BRL – It was such a striking scene in my head. Even as I sketched it out, before I’d really started, that scene, the sound of her boots, the way she moved – it was all very vivid to me. It just seemed to stamp her all over the pages – she’s a very big presence!

    Blanche – thank you!

Cathy – one of the many reasons I love to write them, too! Thanks!

Sheila – It’s always a struggle to keep from being distracted by a shiny new idea – but I’m really sort of hardline about deadlines. I don’t miss them. Authors need to take care of their responsibilities first – deadlines first and then the shiny! But I do often make notes on other things while I work.

    Sara – thank you.
