Reflecting about goals and things accomplished
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The thing about goals is that sometimes, you don’t feel the immediate reinforcement for having accomplished them until some time gets factored into the scenario.

My husband and I go to Lake Tahoe for our anniversary every year like clockwork, and our 2010 trip is coming up. The thing about regular annniversaries is it gives you that opportunity to reflect on goals accomplished and goals yet to be achieved.

Last year in Tahoe, we were lucky enough to have author and friend Fiona Jayde and her husband come to visit us. I remember both Fi and I were working on promo for various works (I was promo-ing Paradise Rules, and she was promo-ing her Ellora’s Cave Halloween anthology novella. I got a call from my agent, Laura Bradford, who told me that Explosive and another book had sold to Berkley. She also gave me some feedback on sprucing up my Harlequin SSE submission.

So it’ll be nice to see our familiar time share condo and sit there and say–oh, those two projects came to fruition. That’s a very rewarding feeling, because in that environment, I can acutely recall my excitement and thinking about the books still to be written. Now I can sit in that same condo and forget about all the anxieties, worries and hard work that went into the interim. I can just bask in the glow of Explosive coming out in a few months and my HQ SSE books coming out next May/August.

And that’s nice.

Of course, there are some goals I didn’t accomplish. I’ll have to sit in that same condo and know I didn’t lose the ten pounds I wanted to lose. Ugh.

But maybe that experience will motivate me more next year. It’s nice to have a place or occasion like that, where you reflect back on the year and think about how you want to improve, and pat yourself on the back for achieving some goals.

Do you have a place or occasion like that?

I hope you have a great time on your annual trip! I have heard Lake Tahoe is beautiful!

My hubby and I make a point to take a mini vacation, away from the kids, every year. We don’t go to the same place, or even the same time, but we always squeeze in a weekend just for us at least once a year.

Hi Amy! Nice to hear from you. That’s nice that you and your husband do that. Sometimes you just need to get away and get some distance from things and enjoy each other’s company.

    Hmmm..

Good question Beth. My time of reflection tends to come at New Year. Everyone is home, I usually have time off work and I generally do a lot of thinking about what I have accomplished and what I haven’t.

Then there is the day of reckoning, New Year, New Start.. lol
