Gateway to Heaven, Chapter One, and a Giveaway
Monday, May 31st, 2010

Hello all! It’s hard sometimes to familiarize readers with backlists. There’s new and exciting stuff out there, and sometimes older books get forgotten. Gateway to Heaven remains to date one of my favorite Beth Kery books. :) It’s not an erotic, which is why I think it has been overlooked at times. It is very sexy and sensual, though, for those who have doubts.

Gateway is a love story between two unlikely lovers: a gorgeous rock star who has grown weary of his life and career and a young woman that has been protected by her family and community for years due to an awful event from her childhood, a high profile case of sexual abuse that left the community reeling in shock. My heroine, Megan, can’t even remember the event, but nevertheless, her entire life and character have been formed by it. Enter Christian Lasher, who sees her only as a desirable, beautiful woman, and Megan starts to see herself in a whole new light.

I think this is a very unique, tender and sexy romance, and I’d like to share a part of it with you. I’ve posted the entire Chapter One of Gateway to Heaven here. It’s a hefty chapter, too, so I think you’ll really get a feel for these rich characters and the vibrant community where they live. Leave a comment on the chapter to win and I’ll give away a copy of Gateway to Heaven to one commenter next Friday.

Happy Thursday! (and a giveaway)
Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I’ve busy, busy writing my novella for the Berkley Heat anthology. As soon as I finish that, I’ll be moving on to the Silhouette Special Edition Harbor Town series, and my summer will be mostly consumed with that. What kind of summer plans do you have for the long, hot, lazy (hopefully ) summer days? Any vacation plans? I don’t have any until my annual Lake Tahoe trip in September. By the way, my novella for the anthology is set in Lake Tahoe, one of my favorite places in the entire world.

Also, coming up is the Lori Foster event in Cincinnati! Hopefully I’ll get to meet some new people and chat with some old friends.

My latest novel is Velvet Cataclysm from Samhain. For those of you who haven’t read it yet, I’m giving away a copy of it to one commenter on this blog. If you already have Velvet Cataclysm, you may choose a back title from my ebook list–and thanks for buying Velvet Cataclysm!

5 Lips from Two Lips ReviewsI was enthralled. I can’t wait for the next part to come out. I’ll be anxiously waiting. I’d recommend this read to anyone and everyone.

5 Stars from Lea ClosetwriterVelvet Cataclysm is a fast paced, action packed, and emotional erotic paranormal romance that had my adrenalin flowing and heart twisting.

Velvet Cataclysm
by Beth Kery
Available Now

He was taken aback. He hadn’t been prepared for her fierceness, so he couldn’t defend against his reaction when she suddenly came down over him, straddling his hips with her thighs, her soft mound pressing against his aching cock. She placed her hands on his chest and pushed his back against the chair.
“I won’t let you believe that it’s your sole purpose to suffer,” she said, her fragrant breath brushing against his lips. “I won’t let you sacrifice what’s between us to such an idiotic idea.” She shifted her pelvis, rubbing her pussy against him. He couldn’t stop himself. He grabbed her hips and ground her down against his erection rhythmically.
“I cannot have you, Christina,” he growled. She lowered her face toward him. Against his will, he bit at her lower lip, scraping his teeth against the plump flesh until he felt her shiver.
“I can make you happy. You fed from those women. Why won’t you let me sustain you?” He groaned as she ran her hands along his shoulders and back, dropping rapid, airy kisses along his jaw. Too late, he realized he’d dropped the energy barrier he’d erected between them when Christina made her surprise attack. Now his senses were inundated with her potent vitessence. He flexed his fingers greedily into her firm, round ass and rode her pussy along the ridge of his cock, gritting his teeth at the sensation of her heat penetrating his jeans.
“I never feed from a woman more than once. After that, I run the risk of taking too much of her vitessence and harming her. Christina—” She cut him off by biting his lower lip lightly and coaxing him to kiss her. For a few pleasure-infused seconds he ravaged her mouth. When he realized what he was doing, he lifted his head and swatted her ass.
“What…what are you doing?” she asked in amazement when she found herself in his arms. He didn’t answer until he’d opened the screen door to the coach house.
“Taking you to bed.”
She made a low, sexy sound of satisfaction and began kissing his neck hotly. He carried her up the stairs, knowing she occupied the solitary loft bedroom. He stared straight ahead, focusing on his wavering mission while Christina tormented him with her mouth and nibbling teeth.
He closed her bedroom door behind them.
She cried out in surprise when he tossed her down on the bed. He stared down at the vision of her, her midnight hair splayed across the pillow, her cheeks flushed pink, her full lips parted slightly, making them the sweetest, sexiest target for penetration Saint had ever seen.
Before he knew what he was about, he was sliding his first two fingers between those lips, into the warm, wet haven of her mouth. Her eyes went wide in surprise at his actions.
“You think you know what it would be like to bed a creature such as me?” he growled as he thrust his fingers into her mouth.
She nodded and tightened her lips, sucking hungrily. He cursed under his breath but couldn’t stop himself from penetrating her lush lips again and again.

In his battle to resist, he found the impossible. His soul.

Christina Astor’s telepathic ability is an asset in her job as a psychiatric social worker. What’s driving her crazy, though, is her elusive, gorgeous landlord. She senses that Saint Sevliss wants her with an all-consuming hunger that’s somehow…different. Just how different becomes all too clear when his dangerous world collides with hers.

For centuries, Saint’s kind have been called vampire and werewolf. Even soulless. But their true nature remains a mystery. Bound by a magical mandate to control his bloodthirsty clone, Teslar, at all costs, Saint will do anything to keep Christina away. She infuses his gray universe with life and color, but his world—and his need—would destroy her.

When an attack reveals the true power of Christina’s gift, one thing is certain—Teslar won’t rest in his underground labyrinth until he possesses her, body and soul…

As many of you know, I share a yahoo group, Total Exposure, with authors Fiona Jayde, Lacey Savage and Juliana Stone. We have a tradition where we interview each other on release day, and here is Lacey’s interview of me, in celebration of the release of Velvet Cataclysm.

Congratulations
once again on your new release, Beth! Inquiring minds want to know…

Hey, Lacey! Thanks for the questions. Okay, let’s see here….

1. How would you describe VELVET CATACLYSM to someone who’s never read one of your novels?

VELVET CATACLYSM is about a love so powerful that it has the ability to birth a soul, but a love that’s forbidden, as well. I’m a sucker for the theme of thwarted longing. It makes the eventual crash together so blindingly hot.

Velvet Cataclysm is sort of hard for me to describe, actually. Fumbling here. It’s about a man, who is a paranormal creature of unknown origins (which are explained in the book) that we would call vampire or werewolf. He is utterly desolate in the knowledge that he’s a parasite off the human race. It’s a story about him reaching for salvation in his love for a woman and coming to terms with his demons and his hunger. It seems strange to say it, because there’s lots of adventure, and fight scenes, and tons of kinky sex, of course, but all of it resolves into a story of a man building enough internal pressure inside his being that he wins what he considered to be an impossibility: a soul.

2. How does VELVET CATACLYSM compare to your contemporary novels… say, to WICKED BURN? Are there are major similarities between them that would entice a reader familiar with WB to pick up VC?

Hmmm, good question. The romance aspect is always similar in my books, meaning a compelling, unstoppable attraction and love between the hero and heroine. Velvet Cataclysm is different, because these paranormal beings are introduced and the world where they live (which is mostly in the undergrounds of cities or places deep in the Earth). Vic and Niall’s story (Wicked Burn) took place very much in a world we know. Oddly enough, Saint and Christina’s world is the same–Chicago, but it couldn’t be more different, as it is overlaid with different layers of mystery and magic. But a solid romance is a constant in both books. It’s the pillar on which everything else hangs, so Velvet Cataclysm and Wicked Burn are similar in that way.

3. I know you did quite a bit of research on the Chicago underground for this story. What was the most fascinating part of what you uncovered? Was there a particularly interesting tidbit that you didn’t include in the book?

It used to be that all the businesses and houses in the loop area had tunnels beneath them, where they’d bring coal and other supplies on freight cars. It was amazingly efficient. There are several ‘layers’ of tunnels in Chicago, and in most cities. This particular layer of tunneling that delivered coal was the same tunnel that a Chicago worker accidentally pierced in the 1990’s, causing the Chicago flood.

The tunnel featured mostly in Velvet Cataclysm is Chicago Deep Tunnel, which is the deepest and largest system to date.

4. VELVET CATACLYSM is marked as the first book in the Princes of the Underground series. When you do you expect future books to be released, and what can you tell us about what you have planned?

Most of you know I love to travel, so I placed my ‘princes’ in different cities across the globe: New York, London, Paris, Rome and either Dublin or Athens, I haven’t decided for the last. Each will feature that city’s underground. (The reason the princes and their clones spend so much time underground is that they can absorb the energy of the earth–the earth itself has its own soul). The next one is set in London–my favorite city. I’d like to call it Silken Rapture, or something like that, to echo VC. Hmmm…maybe should be Silken Inferno, don’t know. It’s supposed to represent an explosion of need contained within the soft embrace of love, so if you guys have any ideas… Lacey?

Silken Inferno/Rapture/Whatever will come out in 2011.

5. VELVET CATACLYSM is your first vampire novel. I know you enjoy the genre, so why did you wait so long to write a vampire book?

Oh, you know…I didn’t think I had anything original to offer. It’s a genre that’s been done so much, and I’ve liked it since I was young. My sister and I are huge vampire-lovers. We like to de-contextualize the legend and talk about it or the books we’ve read for hours. LOL. So…I guess it’s intimidating to write in a genre you love so much. You feel your own smallness in comparison to the body of work.

6. How is the process of writing a short story or novella different for you than that of writing a full-length novel?

I’m starting to find it to be harder to write a novella. I want to expand characters beyond the scope of the short. It’s hard to carve out that perfect short. I’ve said it before, that I admire how well you do it. It’s quite an art. I think for the past two shorts I tried, one became a novel (Paradise Rules) and one became a short novel (Holiday Bound). So…I think I need work in that department. I’m actually writing a novella at the moment for the anthology with Lauren Dane, Megan Hart and Emma Holly and I’m freaking out, because I just finished the first scene and I’m 20% done with the whole story. Oi.

7. And lastly… if you could have the real Saint Sevliss in the flesh and all to yourself for one night, what would you do with him?

He’d be so obsessed about getting back to Christina, probably not much. *grin* Actually, in the novel there’s a scene with Saint and the man who created him, Kavya, and he accuses Kavya of being a sadist for making him suffer so greatly. If I came face to face with Saint, I’d probably be wishing he wouldn’t accuse me of the same thing. LOL.

I did give him a happily ever after, though, so hopefully he’d forgive me.

Thanks so much, Lacey. Excellent questions, as always.

Thanks so much, Beth!

Velvet Cataclysm Thursday Prize

VelvetCataclysm72LG

I love to travel and I have some favorite cities—New York, Paris, London, Rome, Dublin and of course, my home town, Chicago. One of the first things that popped into my brain for the Princes of the Underground series was at least one of the settings, namely the vast undergrounds of these cities—mysterious labyrinths where most people never tread. In each of these cities, a prince rules, but he has a mission that has been placed into his blood: to keep his “˜dark half,’ his bloodthirsty clone under control.

City undergrounds have always fascinated me—whole worlds beneath the city streets. I wanted there to be another reason that my heroes and anti-heroes were drawn to undergrounds, however, and I gave that reason a little bit of an eco-bent. You see, the princes of the underground can sense and feed not off only human’s vitessence (their life-force), but also off the Earth’s energy itself. Yes, the Earth has a soul.

Here’s a small excerpt from Velvet Cataclysm which comes out next Tuesday from Samhain. This one includes Alison, a young woman who is difficult to characterize as a “˜good’ guy or “˜bad’ guy, but as you can see, Saint is definitely wary of her. I think it’s kind of a funny bit, because Saint is considered a ‘vampire’ but it’s Alison, who is not supernatural, that he considers to be an energy-sucker.

Excerpt

“You’ve got an awesome bike, but your twin’s got one up on you in regard to the transportation to hell department,” Alison said.

Saint didn’t reply, just walked over to the MinerMobile that would quickly take them to the first giant maintenance chamber five thousand feet away. Alison perched on the side of the vehicle and he steered them to the entrance of the thirty-foot-high limestone tunnel.

“It’s weird down here. I noticed it when I was with Teslar,” Alison murmured in a hushed voice after several minutes, glancing around the dark, circular tunnel. The flashing lights on the MinerMobile cast her pale face in crimson light. “Do you think I’m sensing some of those energies you were talking about back at Christina’s—the earth’s soul, or some shit like that?”

Saint shrugged. He doubted it. “What do you hear?”

“Hear? I hear this little car-thingy moving and nothing else. That’s what’s so weird. It’s like we’re insulated from every sound on earth down here. Why? What do you hear?”

“The earth singing,” Saint said simply. “What you’re experiencing is more than likely your imagination. Only the rarest of humans can sense such things.”

“Rare humans like Christina?”

He gave her a hard look when he heard her snide tone of voice. Alison swallowed heavily.

He noticed the rapid throb of her heartbeat. He instinctively set up an energy barrier when the girl leaned closer to him, her eyelids sinking heavily over her huge eyes.

“It’s possible I’m just as special as Christina,” she said huskily.

Her eyes fixed on his mouth. He leaned back deftly, avoiding her seeking lips.

“You know, if you weren’t so busy trying to fuck everyone before they fuck you, you might notice most people aren’t half bad,” Saint said.

“Oh, is that right? Such an angel, aren’t you, Saint? You don’t fool me, even if you have turned Christina into your number one cheerleader.”

Saint stared straight ahead and continued to drive. He knew the girl was taunting him. She existed by quickly gauging other people’s weak points, and Christina was certainly his. Good thing he possessed no vitessence, or a human like Alison could drain him to exhaustion in five minutes flat. As things stood, his admiration for Christina deepened for putting up with little energy-suckers like Alison around the clock.

Thursday’s Prize–is winner’s choice of the Ellora’s Cave print anthology, Naughty Nuptials, Behind Closed Doors by Shannon McKenna, Sweet Surrender by Maya Banks or The Truth About Lord Stoneville by Sabrina Jeffries. To qualify for today’s prize, just comment on what you think of undergrounds. Ever been in a cave, or the subway, or the catacombs? Do feel uncomfortable underground, or do you like it?

Wednesday Prize, and a Peek Under Saints Jeans
Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Well, the Velvet Cataclysm week is moving along at a brisk pace, and by next Monday, you could be the winner of EVERY prize on the days that you have stopped by and commented. Thank you for participating! I really enjoyed reading your answers yesterday. We had a lot of generations of vampires represented.

Today’s prizes are an ebook copy of Velvet Cataclysm, a Beth Kery computer keyboard brush cleaner and a Beth Kery bag. :)

Wednesday’s Contest: As many of you by now know, my tortured, dead-sexy hero Saint puts up an anguished fight to stay away from Christina, the heroine. (Don’t worry, he loses this particular battle gloriously, even if he does win all the other ones). In this particular scene, Christina finally gets a glimpse of what’s beneath her gorgeous landlord’s jeans.
My tongue-in-cheek contest question today is, what’s your preference? Boxers? Briefs? Boxer-Briefs, Commando…or Saint-Style? :)

Velvet Cataclysm
Adult Only Mini-Excerpt

Her hands tightened in anguish on Saint’s shoulders when he separated himself from her.

“How…how did you know it was Aidan?” Her voice sounded hoarse, like she hadn’t used it in a week. It was the white-hot blaze of pure pleasure that had scored her throat, undoubtedly, just like it had the rest of her body.

Saint didn’t respond. Her senses swam in a thick haze of arousal. He straightened and her eyes sprang wide. He’d shoved his jeans down to his thighs. Christina had frequently admired—well, salivated, in fact—over the manner in which Saint filled out his jeans. Seeing his full glory revealed left her brain vibrating with stunned lust. His long, beautifully shaped, golden-hued cock flushed with arousal was one thing. But his penis was erotically highlighted by a leather thong that encircled his lower hips and both thighs, just below his round, shaved testicles. She caught a glimpse of two leather straps tied tightly against his muscular left leg, a thin sheath of sorts, strapped to his outer thigh.

It figured. Saint couldn’t just wear a pair of boxers like most guys.

He pulled his jeans over his hips, inserting his swollen cock down his right pant leg with a grimace. Reality crashed in on her as she watched him fasten his button-flies, wincing as he did so.

“You called him here with your mind,” she whispered incredulously. “You wanted Aidan to interrupt us…to interrupt this,” she said as she nodded to the juncture of her naked, spread thighs. His eyes flashed dangerously when he glanced to where she referred.

He turned his back to her.

Turned his back on her, Christina realized. A band seemed to pull tight around her chest, constricting her breath. Her lungs burned.

“Get dressed and meet us out in the dayroom,” he ordered briskly.

But Christina remained spread-eagled and aghast for several seconds after he left. No human could engage in something so intimate and then just blithely turn and walk away.

Of course, Saint wasn’t human, was he?

She blinked several times and looked around her office. The image of Saint’s retreating back was superimposed on everything she saw.

Contest: In doing research for my first ‘vampire’ novel, I of course had to go back and re-read the classic by Bram Stoker. I was surprised to discover that Dracula was a shapeshifter, a bat, a wolf, etc. I didn’t remember the wolf part, which is actually quite prominent. He’s also a sort of “King” of the wolves. When I went farther in my research, I discovered that the vamprie and wearwolf legend are often intertwined, aspects of each bleeding into the other.

As a result, in Velvet Cataclysm, I made Saint and his followers, the Iniskium, wolf-shifters, for as the chief of the Iniskium Fardusk puts it, the wolf is a noble, revered animal. Teslar–Saint’s vile clone–on the other hand, and his followers, the Scourge revenents, shift into a variety of truly nasty creatures.

Just as an aside, the name of Saint’s mansion and grounds is Whitby, which is a nod to the town in Yorkshire, England where Stoker wrote Dracula.

What was the first vampire novel you ever read? The first movie?
