Beth and the Mall, Not a Good Mix
Monday, March 8th, 2010

Hello all! Hope you had a good weekend. I was at the mall on Saturday. Not any mall, one of the largest malls in the midwest,Woodfield. Now going to the mall is probably a normal event for most people, but I live in the middle of the city, and malls I typically don’t do. So this was quite an experience; one I haven’t had in a while.

One of my first observations is that if I were a teenager in suburban America, I would be SUCH a loser. These kids were everywhere, and their parents must put out some huge bucks for those clothes, shoes and purses. Holy Moley. Status symbols and pheremones in so many directions I was getting a little dizzy.

Secondly, you have to be a good walker to go to Woodfield mall. There’s no quickly running over to Ann Taylor and popping in at Macy’s. NO. You gotta walk and climb stairs and walk some more. They seriously need some little mini cabs in a mall like that. They’d make millions.

The third thing I learned is never to go on a Saturday to Woodfield Mall, especially on one of the first nice days of the year. I knew I was in trouble when I parked by Sears (one of the least favorite stores in the mall for fashionable teenagers) only to discover that Pamela Anderson was there…yes. In Sears! She was doing some promo event. People were lined up in little fenced in mazes like they have at Six Flags to see her.

I finally got through this maze, even though I earned quite a few scowls for cutting in front of people to get through the store. Apparently I look like the type of person who would cut in line to see Pamela Anderson. But before I even got through Sears, there was yet another guest appearance–the Jeweler to Rock Stars! Yes, I could have met the man who designed the jewelry for TWISTED SISTER.

Alas, the siren going off in my head for a new pair of shoes forced me to bypass this truly singular event.

How was your weekend? Any trips to the mall? :)

Cecile–I know, seriously. One needs a support network to do things like shop on the first nice day of the year. lol.

    LOL Beth:

I work next to a big mall (not as large as the one you are describing but a pretty good sized one) and yes the teenagers for the most part are well dressed. However the one I frequent that has the Apple Store I’ve come to love? WOW, extremely well dressed kids.

Pamela Anderson eh? She is a Canuck. lol Although I don’t think she makes her way up to the ‘frozen north’ much anymore.

Sounds like you had quite an adventure, I hope your shoe shopping was successful.

My weekend was very quiet, the weather was so lovely – enjoyed a few nice walks.

    Best

The important thing is that you snagged a nice pair of shoes :) Gotta get the good stuff!

Oh man, going to the mall in Chicago was always a weekend vacation for the family, that we maybe got to do once a year when my sisters and I were young. Course, we couldn’t buy anything because everything was so expensive. But it was fun. I have not been in ages…not so sure I would love it now

Did not do anything much this weekend. Went out with the girls on Friday to celebrate my birthday (a little late, but still fun). Then had to get my 5-year old son to his basketball game by 8 on Saturday, which is so not fun when you roll in late the night before!

You are a very brave woman. I avoid Woodfield unless I am suffering from temporary insanity (or it’s a weekday). Haven’t been there in months, and from November 1 – December 31 I try to not even drive by the mall. Sadly Borders & B&N are close by, so sometimes I’ll make the sacrifice.

Hey, next time call me LOL. Then we can maybe swing by Entourage for some wine :)

LOL Beth. I hate any kind of shopping on weekends including the grocery stores. I can handle Chapters because it’s not in a mall & it’s books of course.

Lea–the Apple Store is a hit in my family (well, not me, to be honest) no matter where it is. You’d LOVE the one on Michigan Ave. And if my sister and her family (professors and college girls) are here, it’s a ‘must see’ destination.

See…so you’d fit right in visiting Chi-town. lol

Amy…I hope you find some bargains shopping for this trip. If you need some tips, let me know. I’m a bargain-holic.

Mary, you’d hate this. There isn’t ONE bookstore in the mall. They are all detached, like Stacy said. *Shaking head* Where does one go for sanity? The Rainforest Cafe? Ugh.

Stacy….never, NEVER again. What was I thinking? AND, after all that, I DIDN’T win a pass to Crowbar to party with Pamela Anderson. Tuh! You’d think I would have gotten something for that.

Cecile–like I said. No bookstores at this mall. I really think it could be a mental health buffer they should think about before they close all these Waldenbooks. lol.
