Would you go out on the Ledge?
Friday, August 28th, 2009

So, Dani from Wheaton just told me she’d gone out on the “Ledge” at what is now formally called the Willis Tower, but which will always be known to me as the Sears Tower. I have a fear of heights, not huge, but there nonetheless. So for me, it’d be a toss up whether I’d rather go out on the Ledge or go to the dentist. Apparently, many visitors lie facedown on the glass floor. Yeesh.

The balconies on the 103rd floor Skydeck are suspended 1,353 feet in the air.

They say the first step is the hardest. (Right.)

Would you go out? What’s the most daring/scary thing you’ve ever done? On purpose, I mean. lol.

It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be!! After awhile it was fun to look out and then down.

NO WAY! I am so scared of heights, you would not catch me up there. It makes me dizzy just looking at it.

I am so not daring. I am pretty much the biggest worrier I know. No risks, or adventure for me. I play it safe all of the time. :-)

Dani–Maybe I could do it, but it’d be such torture, I’d have to wonder why I would. lol. When I go onto the Sears or Hancock Skydeck, I stay a couple feet from the edge.

    Amy–I hear you, lady.

Lori–yes. A company from England bought it, and now it’s the Willis Tower. Sigh. I’m being stubborn and calling it Sears, though. Actually, Sears hasn’t been in there for awhile–they moved out to the suburbs, but it kept it’s original name. Now, United has been coaxed into moving in there, which is nice. However, it will remain the…Willis Tower.

    Oh. My.

No. Sorry, no way, no how. Maybe if my kids were in danger and this was the only way to save them, but otherwise, nope. Aack. I hate heights, so just thinking about it makes me squirm (and NOT in a good way)!

Cool pictures. I would put one foot out & that’s it. I’ve been up in the CN Tower in Toronto but the highest observation deck is enclosed by steel bands that you would not fit through. It’s very windy up there. The glass floor is inside and not as scary looking as The Ledge.

Oh, and yes, I actually have been up the CN Tower, and that was pretty creepy, too. Scariest/most daring thing I’ve done on purpose? I’m sure I can’t remember (blocking it out so I can’t relive it ;))–since I’ve got this fear of heights thing, working on lights for a couple college shows. That involved getting up on scaffolding or cherry pickers or ladders with lights (these can be kind of heavy) and a wrench, and mounting and focusing and adjusting them to the lighting designer’s content. Trust me, my knees were knocking :)

    Hmmmm, lets see, ledge / dentist….ledge / dentist….

I think I’ll take the ledge Beth, given my last trip to the dentist laid me out for days on end…. ack..

    Yep, it’s the ledge..

I wouldn’t be able to go out on it. I’ve been to the Eiffel Tower three times, but only went up it once. I closed my eyes during the elevator ride and that was only to the first viewing platform. I stayed back a few feet from the rail and all my pics have the rail in the lower edge.

I have jumped out of a plane (tandem jump) and been up the Eifel Tower. I also took a two seater plane ride along the East/West German border when it existed in 1987. That was scarier because the plane kept making stuttering noises and I had visions of landing on the wrong side of the border.

Probably the scariest was going into the military. Giving up complete control of your life for 4 years. At least that’s the way it felt when I got on a plane and realized I was leaving every single thing I had ever been familiar with (family, friends, home, job, culture, language etc). Especially realizing that I couldn’t turn tail and run. Thankfully I got over that fear, loved my life, and went on to do less scary things – like jump out of a plane.
