WANTED FOR KIDNAPPING: A bubbly blonde with a penchant for trouble. May be armed (with good intentions) and dangerously seductive…

Kerry Sullivan is running out of time-and patience. With her brother wrongfully accused of embezzling millions, she can’t face one more humiliating hang-up from the man she’s begging for help. Rafael Dawson may be one of the top electronic security experts in the country — and the only man who can prove her brother’s innocence — but his phone manners are appalling. Damn Yankee. Too bad kidnapping the man isn’t an option. Or is it?

There’s nothing Kerry wouldn’t do for her brother. There are lots of things she longs to do to Rafe Dawson when he’s lying tied-up and naked in her secret hideaway. Rafe is certainly something to look at, but Kerry’s brother’s life is riding on her pulling off the impossible: getting this man who’s always in control to lose it. But when the tables get turned, Kerry finds herself at Rafe’s mercy. And the only way to get her way is to let him have his way — with her…

Shayla’s Interview

Thank you for joining us, Shayla!

BK: What is sure to distract you from sitting down and working/writing?
The sound of anyone in my house playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band 2, a really good book (of course), need for caffeine, the phone ringing (which I swear some days is constant), IMing with my friends.

BK: What are you working on presently? What about upcoming releases?

SB: I just finished edits yesterday for SEDUCE ME IN SHADOW and am now starting on those for POSSESS ME AT MIDNIGHT. Then I’ll begin work on the long-awaited book for Luc Traverson, DELICIOUS. My pub schedule for the next 12 months looks like this:

July 7: STRIP SEARCH – Berkley Heat
August: “Fated” – A free Doomsday Brethren novella, Simon & Schuster website
September 29 – SEDUCE ME IN SHADOW – Pocket Books
October 27 – POSSESS ME AT MIDNIGHT – Pocket Books
March 2, 2010 – DELICIOUS – Berkley Heat

BK: Wow. That’s quite a schedule, Shayla. Your fans will be ecstastic. :)
What’s the best compliment you ever got on your writing or a book?

SB: I’m always glad when readers and reviewers say they enjoy my book, but I love to hear that I made readers FEEL. To me, the trick of erotic romance isn’t just to arouse someone with your words, but to also arouse their feelings. When someone tells me I made them smile, laugh, cry and pant all in the same book, I’m happy.

BK: Since Daring Time is a time travel, I’m asking all the guest authors–if you could time travel to any time or place—the past or future—where and when would you go to, and why?

SB: I could never narrow it down. The intellectual curiosity in me makes me want to travel through history and see what it was really like in Regency London or to meet a real Viking, hang out in the Old West, etc. The other part of me is dying to know what will become of my friends and family in the years to come, whether there’s any truth at all to the whole 2012 thing, see what music is like. I’m horribly curious about everything, and visiting both the future and past holds great appeal.

BK: The voracious curiosity of a writer’s mind, I suspect. :) Thank you so much for visiting today, Shayla, and taking the time to tempt us with your thoughts and writing.

THE BIKINI DIARIES

While on business at Florida’s gorgeous Emerald Coast, Wendy Carnes
spots a woman who unknowingly changes her life. “White Bikini Babe” is
the personification of sex, clearly ready for action—and watching her
makes Wendy wonder: If she put on a sexy bikini and got a new
attitude, could she get a hot beach guy of her own? Could she really
indulge in casual sex for the mere sport of it?

Armed with a daring new bikini and a new attitude—along with the
journal in which she records her secret thoughts on the whole
adventure—Wendy soon finds herself engaging in a wild and very naughty
affair with her perfect fantasy man, who pushes her to new sexual
extremes she’s never even imagined. But at what point does the game
become reality? When does the person you pretend to be become the
person you really are? And worse, what happens when your private diary
falls into the wrong hands?

Here’s what critics are saying

“Another smoldering, erotic tale from Alexander – this latest combines
engaging characters and the fiery heat of sexual passion. The sensual
heat index between this couple is completely off the charts. But the
story contains enough realism to ensure that even the most cynical of
readers will find satisfaction with the plotline.” ~Keitha Hart,
Romantic Times Bookclub, 4 ½ STARS

“Hot, sizzling, and sexy! Lacey Alexander definitely will scorch your
senses with THE BIKINI DIARIES! Daring Wendy and lusty Brandon tear up
the sheets and touch the heart in this erotic love story. Lacey
Alexander is a must-buy for every erotic romance reader!” ~ Sarah,
Romance Junkies, 5 BLUE RIBBONS

“I was completely swept up in Wendy’s journey. We can all learn a
lesson from this character. Bold, sexy and romantic, THE BIKINI
DIARIES is the kind of novel that turns the heat way up and inspires
some new fantasies for readers. Lacey Alexander is certainly the queen
of what I fondly call ‘romantic kink’!” ~Jennifer Ray, Wild on Books,
5 BOOKMARKS

“I loved this book. Each sexual act was well written and done
extremely well.” ~Night Owl Romance, 5 OUT OF 5 – LIFETIME KEEPER

“This heated erotic romance star two likable characters who meet when
“she wore an itsy bitsy teeny weenie … bikini”. The plot is … fun as
fans will enjoy … the heroine going from gun shy to gun sly while her
champion struggles with telling her how much he cares about the whole
Wendy.” ~Harriet Klausner

Toni’s Interview

BK: Thank you for joining us!
What is sure to distract you from sitting down and working/writing?

TB: I write full time and spend all day every day at the computer – so my distractions usually come while I’m there. And I am guilty of getting very engulfed in e-mail, sometimes spending hours on it a day, when I should be writing.

BK: What are you working on presently? What about upcoming releases?

TB: Your readers may or may not know that in addition to my erotica, I write sexy mainstream romance as Toni Blake. Right now, I’m working on a Toni Blake book, which will be the second in my Destiny series from Avon.

The first Destiny book, ONE RECKLESS SUMMER, will be released on May 26th, and I’m super excited about it, and excited about the whole series, in which all the stories take place in the small town of Destiny, Ohio. I like to think the Destiny books combine all the heartwarming quaintness of a Susan Wiggs or Debbie Macomber book with all the searing heat of previous Toni Blake novels.

In the erotica world, November will see the release of WHAT SHE NEEDS, my next Lacey Alexander book from Penguin/NAL Heat, a novel that I believe pushes the erotic envelope even further than my past work. And sometime in 2010, Ellora’s Cave will release the last book in my City Heat series, SCOTT’S SATIN SHEETS. I’m also excited to say that I might have some interesting and surprising news to announce to Lacey fans soon, so I hope they’ll stay tuned to my website and newsletter!

BK: Scott’s Satin Sheets…brilliant title! What’s the best compliment you ever got on your writing or a book?

TB: Wow, that’s hard – but a great question. It might be when my fabulous agent first read my work and told me I was “an undiscovered mega-talent”! Or possibly when I have had fans contact me to tell me one of my books is their favorite novel of all time, which is a huge honor. I’ve also heard from a lot of Lacey fans begging me to never quit writing erotica – which is also very flattering and makes me feel that what I do is worthwhile.

BK: If you could time travel to any time or place—the past or future—where and when would you go to, and why?

TB: Oooh, another tough question. There are lots of time periods I love – but maybe wouldn’t want to visit. I love pirates, but fear I’d be horrified by how the reality of their world would clash with my fantasies. And I’m fond of the Regency period, but I really couldn’t stand all those rules. ; ) And I love the wild west, but again – not sure it would live up to my image of it, and not sure I’d want such a hard life. So I think I’ll go with Colonial Williamsburg around 1774. I love the Revolutionary War period, and I also know I could get a decent meal and hotel room there. I can’t help it – I’m a practical girl.

BK: Practical in a good way, to be sure. Thanks so much for sharing a part of yourself with us today, Toni!

Readers–be sure to return Tuesday 4/7 in the evening to find out who won the Bikini Diaries! Also, be sure to enter the Daring Time contest…above!

Title: NOTHING TO FEAR
Publisher: Loose Id
Genre: Erotic Contemporary
Length: Omnibus

Three women haunted by horrors from their pasts. Four men who want to show them there’s Nothing to Fear…

In the Air
If Kirk Healey hadn’t threatened to steal her biggest client, Meadow Gardiner would never have boarded another plane. In flight, only Kirk’s smoldering touch keeps Meadow from succumbing to soul-numbing fear. As kisses lead to a frantic encounter in the airplane lavatory, Meadow must trust her greatest rival to see her safely back on solid ground.

In the Dark
When a total blackout forces Shelly O’Rourke to face her paralyzing fear of the dark, she’s rescued from engulfing terror by the scorching caress (and occasional spanking!) of her estranged-and presumed dead-husband. Making love to a memory forces Shelly to confront her deepest fears…and some are just as menacing by the light of day.

In their Arms
Jennifer Meehan has no qualms about taking two lovers. A long history of cruel betrayal has taught her that unbridled sex is the only way to guard her heart. But the men she’s been seeing separately have joined forces, and now the time has come to reveal all: her body, her soul, and every secret fear she harbors in her heart.

Excerpt (Rated PG-13):

The last time Meadow had boarded an airplane, she had been sixteen. Unlike this massive three-hundred-passenger jet, that aircraft had been a four-seater private plane with one pilot, no flight attendants, and only two additional passengers — Meadow and her mother, Diane. Her father, John, had piloted, a celebratory maiden voyage after gaining his license. His first and last.

The recycled air flooding the cabin slipped beneath Meadow’s jacket sleeves and raised gooseflesh on her arms. She’d strapped the seat belt tight around her midsection, for all the good it would do her. She’d also listened to the flight attendant go through all the appropriate safety precautions, listening with rapt attention for every bit of advice she could use should the unthinkable happen again.

Now there was nothing left to do but sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight.

Or in her case, sit ramrod straight, clutch the armrests as though her life depended on it — which it well could — and try to remember to breathe.

The plane’s engines growled beneath her feet. The sound traveled all the way up her legs and settled like lead in the pit of her stomach. She sat motionless, fingernails digging into the plastic armrest, teeth embedded in the soft flesh of her lower lip. Squeezing her eyes shut, she waited for the inevitable lurching motion of the plane pulling away from the gate. When it came, a whimper escaped her throat.

“I bet you’re not wearing anything under that suit.”

The unashamed bluntness of Kirk’s statement yanked her thoughts from their hysterical downward spiral. She froze, breath lodged in her throat. “What did you say to me?”

His full lips quirked up in a teasing grin that didn’t quite reach his eyes. Instead of mirth, she found nothing but concern and a hint of predatory heat in the green depths.

He leaned in, his mouth close enough to brush her earlobe. “I said, I’m willing to bet you’re not wearing a bra. In fact, I’d go as far as to say you’ve got no panties on, either. Which would mean your pussy’s clamped tight around the fabric of those pants, moistening the surface just a little each time you shift in your seat.”

A sudden flutter of desire breezed through her, bringing back a small measure of self-control. She couldn’t believe he’d spoken the words aloud, much less in public.

She and Kirk were the only two passengers in a three-seat row close to the back of the plane. While chances of someone having overheard him were low, the forbidden thrill of his statement had a profound, immediate impact on her libido.

Her nipples pebbled beneath the thin shift she wore under the suit jacket. His guess had been half-right. She hadn’t bothered with a bra, preferring instead the silky smoothness of the leopard-print shift she’d picked out from among Cuero y Cordón’s delectable offerings.

Not that he needed to know that. And if she’d been just a little less paralyzed with fear, she’d have told him exactly what she thought of his inappropriate comment.

Instead, she scowled and glanced out the window. She shouldn’t have.

Although night had fallen, red, blue, and white lights flooded the airport runway. A few feet away, a man waved two flares, no doubt signaling the pilot in preparation for takeoff. Rain pattered against the metal skeleton of the aircraft and dotted the small windowpane with shimmering beads of colored water. Fog rose from the dark pavement in patches, reaching diaphanous tendrils to brush against the plane’s wings.

The wheels rolled to an abrupt stop. A massive rumbling whirr boomed from the bowels of the jet, gathering force. The trembling whine caused Meadow’s seat to vibrate, and she gripped the armrests tighter in an effort to keep them from shaking.

Her stomach lurched. Unable to bear the menacing sights around her, she squeezed her eyes shut once more. If she could have dared to let go of the armrests, she’d have clamped both palms over her ears too.

A featherlight touch against her collarbone startled her. She tensed, every muscle in her body taut with frightened awareness. His fingertips slid down her skin, from the base of her throat to the valley between her breasts, where they paused for the length of a stuttering heartbeat.

“What are you doing?” she ground out between gritted teeth.

“Touching you.”

The plane moved. It gathered speed, zoomed down the runway. She pictured it sliding along the slick pavement, its sharp nose intent on splitting the air as it soared up into the darkness.

His fingers dipped beneath the lapel of her suit jacket. He found the top edge of her camisole and slipped beneath that too. The heat of his hand warmed her breast, sending a stream of erotic impulses to flood her tense body.

His other hand worked its way up to her throat. He cupped the back of her neck, slipped his fingers among her curls, and formed small circles with his thumb against her skin.

Intriguing though it was, she knew his touch couldn’t distract her from the inevitable lurch of the plane taking off. She braced herself for the moment her stomach would plummet to her ankles.

It never came. Instead, at the exact instant the airplane’s wheels left the runway, his lips fused over hers. His mouth claimed hers and settled there, soft and warm. He didn’t push or force the kiss to become more than what it was — a soothing, genuine anchor to the world dropping away into oblivion.

Meadow’s reality shifted, righting itself as the airplane tilted, rocketing skyward. Unable to trust herself, she curled her fingers into her palm to keep from running them down his chest.

At that moment, she understood what his plan had been all along. He’d meant to distract her, and against all reason, it had worked.

But now that they were in the air, she could handle the fear. She’d gotten over the worst of it. Besides, she couldn’t very well keep her lips flush against Kirk’s for the next eight hours. She had to move away, to break the connection between them, and reestablish some much-needed boundaries.

She told herself it was gratitude that kept her from doing just that. But when the tip of his tongue caressed the seam of her lips, the desire pulsing through her veins took on a life of its own. Rather than pull back, she parted her lips and met his tongue with hers.

A sharp stab of need arrowed deep between her thighs at the contact. Her sex pulsed, fluttering madly against the leopard-print silk of her thong.

She caught his answering groan. His grip on the back of her neck tightened, and he pulled her closer as his tongue invaded her mouth. The tension keeping her spine rigid melted just a fraction, allowing her to lean into his kiss.

He tasted just as she remembered, like cinnamon and male heat. The rough scrape of his beard against her chin sent another wave of longing to shimmer through her veins, stoking the twin flames of desire and curiosity.

What would it feel like to have those lips pressed against her flushed sex? To know the intimate brush of his beard along her inner thigh? To clamp her thighs tight around his head as his tongue delved deep within her folds and –

“Pillow, ma’am? Sir?”

She barely heard the flight attendant’s question. She’d have ignored it altogether, but Kirk swiped at her lower lip one last time before pulling back and glancing up at the woman.

“We’ll take two of those.” He reached out and grabbed the offered pillows. “And two more blankets, if you wouldn’t mind.”

Meadow’s lips hummed with the lingering sensation of the kiss. Flexing her stiff fingers, she risked letting go of the armrest long enough to bring them to her mouth. Just as she feared, her lips were swollen from the kiss.

A blush crept up her neck and into her cheeks. Her heart pummeled her breastbone, yet Kirk looked as calm and unperturbed as ever.

For a fleeting moment, she had the urge to slap him, just to see if he’d react with something other than a quirky grin. Squelching the impulse, she waited until the flight attendant returned with the blankets. The woman’s name tag read Shelly O’Rourke. When Shelly winked before turning away to tend to another passenger’s needs, it took all of Meadow’s self-control to ignore her.

Shifting so her back lodged against the armrest, she folded her arms across her chest and pinned Kirk with a long stare. “You had no right to do that.”

He studied her face for what felt to her like an eternity. The heat of his gaze lingered on her skin as sure as if he’d touched her.

“I wanted to,” he said at last, his voice low and husky. “More importantly, you wanted me to.”

Lingering traces of panic whispered through her mind. To her surprise, the terror had lost some of its severity. “I didn’t ask you to –”

“You didn’t have to.”

He unfolded one of the blankets, then spread it out over her legs. He did the same to the second and laid it across his lap.

She’d just opened her mouth to say she wasn’t cold when the lights in the cabin dimmed.

“I think they want us to go to sleep.” He reached out and tucked a stray curl behind her ear. His knuckles brushed against her cheek. “Do you want to go to sleep, Meadow?”

Lacey’s Interview

BK: Congrats Lacey. NOTHING TO FEAR is a terrific idea–three erotic stories about three different women who have various fears and phobias and the four hot men who help them get past those fears. What was the genesis of the idea for this book?

LS: Well, it all began with the first story in the omnibus. I wrote it as a stand-alone, after a particularly vivid nightmare about flying on a passenger plane that crashed onto an iceberg. (I must have been watching too much Lost the night before or something. LOL) At the time, the story was titled DON’T LOOK DOWN, and I really thought that would be the end of it. But when I sent it to Loose Id, my editor told me that the management team doesn’t accept short stories under most circumstances, and they asked if I’d be willing to write two more stand-alone yet loosely connected stories to form an omnibus. I agreed, and the end result is the three-story package you see now.

BK: We all know you have a zombie-phobia. Any…er…real-life fears? (I’m not being prejudice of the paranormal variety of fears–zombies are DEAD after all.)

LS: Oh, yeah. I’m terrified of a lot of things. Just a few, off the top of my head: heights, the dark (so the second story in the omnibus hit really close to home), doctors, dentists and perhaps saddest of all… failure.

BK: Fill in the blank: My worst fault is_______ but I make up for it by__________.

LS: My worst fault is an all-encompassing fear of failure that keeps me from trying new things, but I make up for it by challenging myself to take baby steps toward scary and exciting new goals.

BK: You are a veteran writer. Do you ever wish you had taken a different path in your writing, or done anything differently? If so, what? If not, why do you think you are on the right path?

LS: I would have taken more risks (wow — do you see a theme emerging, or is it just me? LOL). I would have taken on more projects that challenged me, and moved further away from my comfort zone. But it’s never too late, right?

BK: Out of all the characters in NOTHING TO FEAR, which is most similar to you and why? Which was the biggest conundrum to you?

LS: The most similar to me is Shelley, the heroine from IN THE DARK. For one, we share a fear, so her phobia was a breeze to write. Two, we’re both desperately, madly, head-over-heels in love with our husbands. Except her husband is nothing like mine.

The biggest conundrum was Jennifer, the heroine from IN THEIR ARMS. She’s terrified of emotional intimacy (for good reason, as it happens), but she’s totally open with her sexuality, to the point of flaunting it. She was a challenge for me to write, because I often found it difficult to get into her head. Hopefully I did a good enough job.

BK: What’s up for you next, Lacey?

LS: Ah! I was afraid you’d ask. *g* Honestly? For once… absolutely nothing. I’ve got nothing contracted, nothing in the finished stages, nothing even in the beginning stages. I guess the future’s a blank slate. I’m as curious as everyone else to see what comes next for me.

BK: If you could time travel to anyplace and anytime, where/when would you go?

LS: I have a total fascination with Ancient Egypt, so that’s definitely the era I’d choose. Maybe circa 1340 BC Akhetaten (what’s now known as Amarna).

BK: I have a fascination for Egypt, too, Lace. We should go together some day. :)

I Want My BBC

Having just finished a book, I’m kind of in tidy up and relaxation mode for a week or two. I began to go through a gift my husband recently gave me–several BBC movie collections. I picked two fantastic ones right off the bat: North and South and Daniel Deronda.

North and South is based on the 1885 novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. This story runs contrary to what you might expect from a novel from this time period, as it contans a very strong social element and takes place in a gritty, industrial town.

The title reflects the contrasts between the wealthier south of England and the industrial north, as well as the characters of the gently bred, middle class heroine Margaret Hale and the seemingly cold, hard ‘master’ of the local cotton mill, John Thorton. Ms. Hale is at first appalled by Thornton, thinking him brutal and callous to his workers. Despite his cold exterior, however, Thorton has his reasons for his actions and what appears as cruelty actually stems from concerns for his workers’ safety.

Thornton is a complex hero, driven by the necessity of caring for his mother and sister and terrified of financial ruin. At the same time, he longs for the beauty of knowledge and art. It is this part of him, perhaps, that falls in love with Margaret.

I liked Margaret very much. She was a strong heroine, smart and compassionate. Thornton proposes to her half way through the story. As in Pride and Prejudice he is rejected, and it takes Margaret a while to see his good qualities and to understand and love him.

The secondary characters in North and South are well drawn–my favorite being the mill worker Nicolas Higgins and his two daughters, whom Margaret befriends. It’s nice to see a strong, working class family in a late Victorian-era story. Higgins has a noble spirit, and he while he and Thornton start out being enemies, they come to respect one another’s strengths.

Just a side note–the musical score to this movie is beautiful and enriches the romance greatly.

My second movie is Daniel Deronda. I will admit that I’ve never even heard of this George Elliot novel. I’ve read Middlemarch, although it’s never been a great favorite, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from the BBC movie.

I’ll state it succinctly–I was enraptured by Daniel Deronda.

The sets, costumes, the actors and actresses cast a spell on me. In tone, this movie couldn’t be more different than North and South. However, both stories have strong social elements to them. Daniel Deronda, played wonderfully by Hugh Dancy, is…well, good and beautiful. Not in a nauseating, sickening way, but in a noble, quiet and enduring fashion.

He contrasts greatly with the stunning, selfish Gwendolyn. He can’t help but be attracted to her sexual beauty anymore than she can help being attracted by his goodness. They are the inverse of each other, soul mates against all odds. Gwendolyn is a piece of work, to put it mildly, but once again, here is a complex, fascinating character reminiscent of a Scarlet O’Hara. And can this actress wear the period dress. OMG, she looks amazing.

Okay, enough gushing about dresses.

This is a movie about moral development and discovery of one’s true self. I suspect that the story itself was very, very good, but the BBC adaptation is really to be heralded. This movie is a treat for the senses. I was kept on my toes wondering if Daniel would fall for the splendid Gwen or the modest, soulful singer Mira. It felt a little bit like Ivanhoe with Rowena and Rebecca. I liked his choice, but tell me what you think if you catch the movie. I highly recommend it.
